Mainah organization has officially launched an inspiring new initiative aimed at empowering high school and tertiary students to become climate leaders who can drive change in their schools, communities and beyond. The project comes at a critical time, as Africa faces escalating climate challenges that threaten lives, livelihoods and ecosystems.

On 10 October 2025, Mainah Association officially kickstarted the African Youth Climate Leaders (AYCL) journey through an engaging session with students at Herentals College in Bulawayo. The event marked the beginning of a nationwide effort to inspire and mobilize young people as champions of climate action.

During the session, students participated in interactive discussions and learning activities designed to build climate awareness and explore practical ways to take action within their schools and communities. The launch symbolized more than just the start of a project, it represented the birth of a youth-led movement dedicated to creating a resilient, sustainable and fair future for Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole.

Why This Matters for Africa

Africa is one of the regions most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Rising temperatures, recurring droughts, floods and food insecurity are already affecting millions across the continent. Yet Africa also holds one of the world's greatest resources; its young people. With more than 60% of its population under the age of 25, young people are not only the most affected by the climate crisis but also the most crucial agents of change.

In Zimbabwe, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible through erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and severe cyclones such as Idai, which devastated communities and infrastructure. Agriculture, the heartbeat of Zimbabwe's economy and a vital source of food and income, remains highly vulnerable. These challenges underscore the need to prepare and equip the next generation to lead in building resilience and finding sustainable solutions.

Empowering the Next Generation

Mainah's new African Youth Climate Leaders Project seeks to do just that. By equipping young people with knowledge, leadership skills, and hands-on opportunities, the program aims to nurture a generation of climate-conscious leaders ready to champion sustainable development and community resilience.
